Redfish Lake, the largest lake in the Sawtooth Mountains, is located 5 miles south of Stanley. It is named for the brilliant sockeye salmon that once came to spawn in such massive quantities that the lake appeared red.
The visitor center offers a variety of interpretive activities and evening programs, including exhibits about the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, geology, history and wildlife. Visitors also can find three different self-guiding auto tape/CD tours for the three scenic byways that converge in Stanley. The Visitor Center is open weekends during the summer, 9:30 am to 5 pm.
