The Sawtooth-Salmon River Country is one of the most beautiful places on earth! If you have visited here, you know we aren’t lying.
- It includes the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, 756,000 acres that Congress designated in 1972 as our country’s first National Recreation Area. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service to protect the values that led to its designation, including scenic, natural, historic, pastoral, and wildlife.
- It includes the Salmon River, the longest undammed river in the United States, which is the route of the longest salmon migration (900 miles) in the world.
- It includes the Sawtooth Wilderness and much of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. It borders the largest wilderness area (3 million acres) in the Lower 48.
This adds up to spectacular alpine scenery, iconic wildlife, rich pioneer history, unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities, and more than just the essence of the American West.
